The Anaheim Ducks announced yesterday that they’ve signed forward Josh Lopina to a three-year entry-level contract. The deal will kick in next season and carries a $878,333 cap hit.
The forward was selected by the Ducks at the beginning of the fourth round of last year's NHL Draft, being taken 98th overall. Lopina has spent the last two seasons playing in the NCAA with UMass-Amherst and scored 12 goals and 27 points in 27 games this season.
Lopina will report to the AHL’s San Diego Gulls for the remainder of the season. Given that he’s already 21 years old, it may be a smoother transition to professional hockey and it’ll be interesting to see how he performs at a higher level.
