The Anaheim Ducks traded forward Rickard Rakell to the Pittsburgh Penguins today, in exchange for a 2022 second-round pick, forwards Zach Aston-Reese and Dominik Simon, as well as prospect Calle Clang.

Rakell is 28 years old and has spent his entire career with the Ducks to this point, playing in 550 career games with the team. This season, Rakell has scored 16 goals and 28 points in 51 games with the Ducks, a pace of 26 goals and 45 points per 82 games.

Aston-Reese is 27 years old and has scored two goals and 11 points in 52 games. He’s set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason, with his current contract being worth $1.73 million.

Simon is also 27 years old and scored three goals and nine points in 55 games with Pittsburgh this season. He too will become an unrestricted free agent this offseason and his current deal is worth $750,000.

Clang is a 19-year-old goalie who the Penguins selected in the third round of the 2020 NHL Draft. This season, he’s posted a .915 save percentage in 17 games, playing in Sweden’s highest professional league.

I’ll go more in-depth on all the trades over the next little while but for the Rakell trade, I think this is a fair deal for both sides. Rakell’s production has dropped a bit and he’s on an expiring contract, but the Ducks still got back a second-round pick, a prospect selected in the third round and two depth forwards, with Aston-Reese specifically being a solid defensive forward.

DUCKS ACQUIRE EVGENII DADONOV

The Ducks have also acquired forward Evgenii Dadonov and a second-round pick from the Vegas Golden Knights, in exchange for defenseman John Moore and the contract of Ryan Kesler.

Dadonov is 33 years old and has scored 15 goals and 27 points in 62 games with Vegas this season, a pace of 20 goals and 36 points per 82 games. He has another year remaining on his deal at a $5 million cap hit.

The second round pick will come in either 2023 or 2024 and is dependent on the results of the conditions in the Jack Eichel trade from earlier in the season.
