Back from the ashes comes the second installment in a re-launch of the “Display Case” series, offering a peak into the swag landed by Hockeybuzzards like you, and the unique stories that come along with them!

I love stuff like this, and originally set out to do a column like this, because these are the types of memorabilia and collectible scores that I feel make the hobby fun and interesting. More than just walking up to a counter and buying something, the people featured before and moving forward all have unique, intriguing and entertaining stories to go along with their treasures that the aforementioned straight-up purchase rarely has. That’s what it’s about for me, and I hope that as you peruse the previous “Display Case” articles and those to come you’ll see that although the piece at the centre of discussion may not always be that much of a standout, the story that accompanies it makes it a gem!!!

With that in mind, let’s take a look at the latest installment! This comes to us courtesy of reader named Norbi and this gem of a team Canada jersey he had signed during the 2004 World Cup of Hockey…

I have a team Canada jersey that might be intriguing. I personally collected all the signatures as a 10 year old. It was at the world cup of hockey in Toronto in 2004. My family had flown over from Hungary to watch team Canada play in a round robin game against Russia (I am from Hungary, but am a Canadian citizen as well). 2004 was the year I really got into hockey, having spent a lot of time in Florida. I'm a huge Lightning fan; though my first hockey game was a Leafs Panthers game down in Sunrise in December 03 (we were late getting to the game, but the first thing I saw walking in to the stadium was Tie Domi bloodily beating a Panthers player. It got me hooked to say the least).

In Toronto I was fortunate enough to stay at the same hotel as team Canada was. Every morning and evening I'd be on the lookout to get my jersey signed by any of the players or staff. By the end of the week, I had accumulated literally everybody's signatures: Lemieux, Sakic, Gretzky, Lowe, etc.

I also managed to get pictures with a lot of the players, including my idol at the time, Vinny
Lecavalier, who I had just months before stayed up till 6am on a regular basis to watch the Lightning's Stanley Cup run live on tv over in Europe.

The jersey is honestly my pride and joy and collecting all the signatures myself, at such a young age, just adds to the feeling of accomplishment. (NOTE: If you notice, there is one personalized signature above the Nike swoosh. I checked with Norbi and that was from Joe Thornton)

Also, you may notice that I got that framed picture of me and Lecavalier signed (NOTE: the picture was one taken in Toronto during the 2004 World Cup). It's funny because I went to see the Lightning play in Prague when they came over to start the season in 2008, and we found the hotel the team was staying at. I got the picture printed in Hungary, and then signed by Vinny over in Prague.

Great stuff Norbi! A sweet jersey and a very personalized picture tying years, continents and a love of hockey all together for a die-hard fan!!!

As for the rest of you, do you have a piece of treasured memorabilia that has a great story behind it? Let me know and you can be featured in an article. Doesn't matter how big or small the piece is, how valuable it may be, or whether it's a common item or more oddball. If you think it has a story, contact me via the information below and we'll chat. In the meantime, check out some previous "Display Case" articles via the links below to see what others have submitted in the past...
