The Carolina Hurricanes played three games last week and hired a familiar face in a front office role. Here's last week's recap of news and notes.

HURRICANES SPLIT SERIES WITH BLACKHAWKS, BEAT BLUE JACKETS

The Hurricanes had two games against the Blackhawks last week, winning the first game 4-3 in a shootout, before dropping the second game 6-4. Carolina then played in another high-scoring game, beating Columbus 6-5. The Hurricanes will face the Blue Jackets once again tonight, in the second half of the two-game series.

WILLIAMS HIRED AS SPECIAL ADVISOR TO GM

Last week, the Hurricanes announced that they’ve hired Justin Williams as Special Advisor to the General Manager. Williams retired at the end of last season’s playoffs and is a three-time Stanley Cup Champion.

MRAZEK HAS SURGERY

Petr Mrazek will be out indefinitely, after having surgery on his thumb. He was originally injured in a game against the Dallas Stars on Jan. 30.

FIVE PLAYERS RETURN TO LINEUP

Warren Foegele, Jordan Martinook, Jaccob Slavin and Teuvo Teravainen all returned in Tuesday’s game against Chicago. Jesper Fast also returned in yesterday’s win over Columbus.

As for our poll questions, here are some of the results, along with my thoughts on how they turned out:

QUESTION: How do you feel about Carolina's situation in net with Petr Mrazek injured?

(Votes: 87)

May need to trade for a goalie: 67%
Confident in James Reimer and Alex Nedeljkovic: 33%

I think Reimer and Nedeljkovic will get a real chance with Mrazek out but it’s certainly possible the Hurricanes look to add a goalie via trade. Goaltending has been one of the few weak spots in Carolina’s lineup and with Mrazek and Reimer both on expiring contracts, perhaps the Hurricanes will look to make a more permanent upgrade in net.

QUESTION: Who do you think has been most reliable in the defensive zone so far?

(Votes: 50)

Jaccob Slavin: 30%
Brett Pesce: 22%
Jake Gardiner: 16%
Haydn Fleury: 14%
Brady Skjei: 10%
Dougie Hamilton: 8%

Slavin has been good and Gardiner is actually off to a fairly decent start as well. However, Dougie Hamilton is having a bit of a rough go in his own end so far.
