There isn't much to write about with the Calgary Flames these days, so I decided to write a post about goal scoring. Somewhat funny, because the Flames probably won't be doing much of it this season.
Anyways, I was looking through the HockeyAnalysis database reviewing some stats over the last two seasons and I ended up looking at 5 vs. 5 goal scoring.
As you might expect, Steven Stamkos is the top goal scorer during 5-on-5 play over the last two seasons and has a commanding lead over the rest.
After that, the rest of the top-20 are all bunched together and there are a few somewhat surprising and interesting names in the group.
Below are the top-20 5 vs. 5 goal scorers over the last two season with the amount of 5 vs. 5 time on ice they've seen right beside the total.
A few things stand out, but the most interesting thing to me is that Jonathan Toews is 2nd in 5 vs. 5 goals over the last two seasons despite seeing less ice than everyone on the list. It's also somewhat surprising because though he's a star, he's categorized as a two-way stud and not an elite goal scorer. He's keeping some good company.
What stands out to you guys? Feel free to leave your thoughts in the comment section.
