The Blue Jackets entered free agency hoping to add an established player to their blue line.
They were unable to do so during Day 1 of free agency, however, they signed center Greg Campbell to a two-year contract shortly after Mark Letestu left Columbus to sign with the Edmonton Oilers.
The Blue Jackets obviously feel Campbell can replace Letestu and eat his minutes on the 4th line and penalty kill.
I'm a little more reserved on the signing, though, as I'm not particularly fond of Campbell.
While Campbell does bring more in terms of a physical game he is not as good of a skater, not as good defensively, in my opinion, and certainly not in Letestu's league when it comes to creating offense.
Campbell's underlying numbers are poor, too.
As you can see he's actually pretty good in terms of preventing goals but his team does so little offensively when he's on the ice that he actually comes away in the red.
The Blue Jackets are a pretty young team and I can understand why they'd want a veteran to come in and play these tough minutes.
I just think there were some better options out there but what is done is done.
Greg Campbell is a Blue Jacket for the next two years.
