I don’t think it’s a question about what he’s worth or should we pay him. It’s how he and his contract fit into the timeline of this team. He’s a 3rs line center. As nice as his his story is with us and he is a quality bottom 6 piece there’s no doubt, I would bring him back for one year after arbitration and sell him for a 1st at the deadline, that’s what will bring the most value to where we are at

Is he worth a first? Laughton got a first because he still had term left, so Toronto was getting him for 2 playoff runs. Getting an RFA with arbitration rights who is a third/ fourth liner at best, who also wants more than he is worth, doesn't sound like a deal to me. I doubt he would get a first.

So what should they do. Overpay him? I’m not interested in giving multi year deals to bottom 6 players right now

100% he gets a first. He’s better than Laughton regardless of contract
