I don’t think it’s a question about what he’s worth or should we pay him. It’s how he and his contract fit into the timeline of this team. He’s a 3rs line center. As nice as his his story is with us and he is a quality bottom 6 piece there’s no doubt, I would bring him back for one year after arbitration and sell him for a 1st at the deadline, that’s what will bring the most value to where we are at |

Is he worth a first? Laughton got a first because he still had term left, so Toronto was getting him for 2 playoff runs. Getting an RFA with arbitration rights who is a third/ fourth liner at best, who also wants more than he is worth, doesn't sound like a deal to me. I doubt he would get a first. |

So what should they do. Overpay him? I’m not interested in giving multi year deals to bottom 6 players right now
100% he gets a first. He’s better than Laughton regardless of contract |

No, I wouldn't overpay him. I would be in the trade him boat at any salary above his current pay.
Still doubt he would get a first. |

The Laffs got him for their playoff run. Cates really doesn't have that sort of resume at this point. And no, I would not overpay Cates. He is basically a dime a dozen player which the Flyers are loaded with in their system. It goes back to the Flyers always overvaluing their players and this has been happening for years now. |

Just looking at a couple players who were signed by Vancouver, before the announcing of the cap raising, I would think he will be signed in the high 3 million range.
Those Canucks signed Nils Hoglander to a 3 million dollar contract, after 1 season of point totals roughly equivalent to Cates. They also signed Dakota Joshua to a 3.25 million deal, for 1 season of point totals slightly lower than what Cates has done in 2 seasons.
Neither 1 of them are centre's and both are 3rd or 4th liners. |

Reputation in the playoffs? What playoffs lol the one year in the bubble?
Cates is not a dime a dozen player. He’s a 40 point 3rd line defensive center with size that was a +3 on a crappy team. excellent along the wall and winning stick battles. He will without a doubt get a first. Brandon Tanev got a 2nd at the deadline.

He ups his game come playoff time. What exactly are Cates' playoff stats genius??

I try not to overvalue our guy. I like Cates, I just don’t love him. He’s a piece that can be had for reasonable 3-3.25m. I’d rather not go higher than 3.5. For 35-40 points and solid defense, you don’t mind him in the bottom 6.
And yeah, you can flip him. He won’t get you a 1st unless he has a couple years of term left on a contract, but a playoff team would take a flier on him for down the stretch.
Still, at 26 years old, it’s a fit. Trying not to go above 28ish unless they’re just cheap stopgaps until the team matures. |

If these recent reports are true, sounds as if Tocchet is getting the job. Boy, I hope not. Up until this point DB has not stayed lock in step with the so called, “Flyers way.”
Because of this, I was open minded about his tenure as GM. To me, this would be a circle back move. Just trying to understand Danny and Jonesy thought process here. What would make them think that Tocc is the fit for this team, right now? Set aside his coaching record which isn’t all that great either.

"Flyers aren't that good. What Should They Do? Also, What are your thoughts on Murray Craven?"
See? |
