we have a signing. Dominic Turgeon has been signed for 1 year at 750K NHL and 115 AHL. Please proceed to your regularly scheduled blogging.

Yzerman picked up a 2nd round pick and a veteran defenseman. As per usual, the comments section was a far more interesting read! Stammer, Sven, Gergeswillems, Henry, Wingz4life and some Winnipeg fans just made for some outstanding back and forth. I’m so thankful for all of you!

In the video clip above, Yzerman discusses the Marc Staal trade and continues to emphasize “future assets”. His take inspires some confidence. “We have cap space and we want to use it wisely”. Detroit has to ice a team this year, but the more assets that can be gained for the “team of tomorrow” the better. I thought it was well worth the watch.

Draft pick predictions are coming in fast and furious. A lot of people chiming in for Rossi. After the assignment of Rasmussen to the same Austrian team as Marco Rossi, there is some suggestion that Yzerman tipped his hand. That may well be true, but I still have that lingering voice in the back of my head that says, “remember Seider?”

When Yzerman drafted Seider, I remember a bizarre flurry of responses. One longtime hockey guy that I respect a lot tweeted, “Is it too late to get Ken Holland back?” That one shocked me. A year later most of us accept that Seider was a very good pick, and Steve kept it close to the vest for a reason. He grabbed the player he wanted.

Center is a critically important position that you have to get right. Defense and Goaltending are as well. I’ve seen Yzerman build a team in Tampa where he drafted and brought in the right pieces. This could all be leading to Rossi being picked, who then may well spend the season in Austria or report to a jr team. What sticks in the back of my mind is the “chatter” last year that Yzerman is not “sold”. On Rasmussen.

If Yzerman trades back and grabs Askarov or if he keeps the pick and goes a completely different direction, nothing will be shocking. The Captain has a plan and works in “stealth mode” most of the time. We will soon know the draft results, and any trades and/or signings will start to pain the picture for this year and beyond. Until it is all set in stone, it feels impossible to predict a very creative and competent GM in Steve Yzerman.
