Wrap: Flyers Beat Coyotes, 5-3

The Philadelphia Flyers skated to a 5-3 victory over the Arizona Coyotes at Gila River Arena on Saturday. The Flyers, who have won back-to-back games for the first time since Oct. 27 and 28 (at Edmonton and Vancouver).

van Riemsdyk (4th goal of the season) gave the Flyers an early first period lead. Arizona's Jay Beagle (1st) answered right back. The game went to the first intermission knotted at 1-1.

Scott Laughton (6th) restored a Philadelphia lead at 5:26 of the second period. Nick Schmaltz (1st) got the goal back only for the Flyers to go ahead again on a Patrick Brown (1st Flyers goal, also credited with six hits) unassisted tally. Philly then supplemented the lead with a van Riemsdyk (2nd of the game, 5th of the season) deflection power play goal.

Team captain Claude Giroux (10th) made it a 5-2 edge in the third period. Lawson Crouse (6th) scored a mid-period goal to reduce the deficit to two goals.

Martin Jones made 29 saves on 32 shots to earn the win. Karel Vejmelka took the loss, stopping 29 of 34 shots.

Phantoms Defeat Monsters, 4-2

The Lehigh Valley Phantoms snapped an eight-game winless streak with a 4-2 home win over the Cleveland Monsters on Teddy Bear Toss Night at the PPL Center. The game was tied at 2-2 heading into the third period but the Phantoms struck for two closely spaced goals and went on to nail down the victory. The power play has been a sore spot for the Phantoms for most the season but the team stepped up to go 2-for-5 on this night.

Wade Allison, activated from IR recently, played for the first time this season. He had an assist, five shots on goal and created one of his team's power plays. Defenseman Cam York, who has recovered from a bout with COVID-19, returned to the lineup. Allison and York assisted on the game's first goal, as Gerry Mayhew potted an Allison rebound for a power play goal. A torrent of teddy bears, earmarked for charitable donation, promptly came flying out onto the ice.

The Phantoms later got a second period goal by Egor Zamula (PPG, center point shot through traffic) and then third period goals by Adam Clendening and Maksim Sushko.

Lehigh Valley dominated most of the first period but the game went to intermission tied at 1-1. The tables turned in the middle frame, as Cleveland had the better of the play and briefly took a 2-1 lead but the Phantoms got it back. Clendening and Sushko (unassisted) scored 1:45 apart early in the third period as the Phantoms took a 4-2 lead they'd never relinquish.

Felix Sandström (seven saves on eight shots) started in goal but had to leave after one period due to a sinus issue. Pat Nagle entered in relief for the final 40 minutes and earned the win with 21 saves on 22 shots.

The Phantoms return to action on Sunday, playing the Hartford Wolf Pack in a game that will be nationally televised on NHL Network. Game time is 3:00 p.m. ET.
