Phantoms Close Out WBS Series

The Lehigh Valley Phantoms finished off their first-round Calder Cup playoff series with a 5-4 overtime win against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at the PPL Center in Allentown on Friday. The Phantoms overcame deficits of 1-0 after the first period, 3-1 entering the third period and 4-3 within the waning minutes of the third to prevail in sudden death. Lehigh Valley won the best-of-three series, two games to zero.

Three power play goals by the Phantoms plus a tying 4-on-4 tally lifted the Phantoms in regulation. Tanner Laczynski scored twice in the third period, tying the score at 3-3 and 4-4 on a power play deflection and a 4-on-4 snipe from the bottom of the left circle. Jacob Gaucher potted a Brendan Furry rebound at 2:11 of overtime to end the series. Earlier, the Phantoms received power play goals by Ronnie Attard and Emil Andrae.

Cal Petersen finished with 24 saves on 28 shots in Game 2. In a losing cause, Joel Blomqvist stopped 29 of 34 shots for WBS. The Phantoms were 3-for-6 on the power play and 4-for-5 on the penalty kill.

Ersson Named to Tre Kronor

Flyers goaltender Samuel Ersson has been named to Team Sweden for the final Euro Hockey Tour tournament -- the Betano Hockey Games in the Czech Republic from April 30 to March 5 -- in preparation for the 2024 IIHF World Championships in Prague and Ostrava (May 10 to 26).

Ersson represented Sweden internationally at the 2018-19 World Junior Championships, but the upcoming WC-prep tourney and the IIHF World Championship will mark his first time playing for Tre Kronor (the men's national team). Ersson, 24, will be joined by fellow first-time Tre Kronor selectees Isac Lundeström of the Anaheim Ducks and Fabian Zetterlund of the San Jose Sharks. Lundeström and Zetterlund are also 24 years old.
