The New York Islanders started their five-game road with a win, defeating the Seattle Kraken 5-2 last night.

The Islanders started strong and opened the scoring midway through the first period, as Brock Nelson got a shot off from a good spot, beating Philipp Grubauer over his shoulder. The Islanders then added to their lead later in the frame, as Noah Dobson’s point shot went in off Zach Parise and while it was initially called off due to goaltender interference, the call was reversed after a challenge. It was an excellent first frame for New York, outshooting Seattle by a 13-4 margin and going into the intermission up by a pair of goals.

The Islanders managed to carry the momentum into the second period and only about five minutes into the frame, Zach Parise got a pass out front to Kyle Palmieri, who beat Grubauer. Then after New York continued to dominate, Casey Cizikas buried a bounce that came off the boards behind the net, making it a 4-0 game.

Yanni Gourde did respond for the Kraken right after that and Seattle started to fight back in the second half of the frame. While they couldn’t score again in the second period, Riley Sheahan managed to capitalize on a weird bounce early in the third period that Ilya Sorokin couldn’t track, making it a 4-2 game. The Islanders held on after that though and Zach Parise added a late empty net goal, securing a 5-2 win.

The first half of the game was probably the best the Islanders have looked in a long time. They were pressuring hard, caused all sorts of turnovers and gave up almost nothing to the Kraken.

They did certainly let up in the back half and if it weren’t for some clutch saves by Sorokin in the third period, the Kraken may have been able to storm back. Overall though, it was a really promising game from the Islanders, for the most part.

It also marked Zdeno Chara’s 1651st NHL game, which tied him for most all-time by a defenseman. He’s set to break the record in the Islanders next game, which comes tomorrow against the San Jose Sharks.
