The New York Islanders picked up a 4-1 win over the Boston Bruins last night in their first home game back since the All-Star Break.

The Islanders started off very slow, being outshot 13-6 by the Bruins in the opening frame. While the game remained scoreless through the majority period, Taylor Hall got the Bruins on the board with about 2:30 to go, beating Sorokin from a brutal angle.

New York did come out with a much stronger second period, generating a lot more momentum. Then on a power play midway through the period, Jean-Gabriel Pageau went to the net to bury a loose puck, tying the game.

The Islanders put together another really strong frame in the third period, and Noah Dobson gave the Islanders a lead with a point shot through traffic. Then after continuing to create chances throughout the period, Mathew Barzal dropped a pass to Kieffer Bellows on a rush and went to the net, tapping in a rebound to make it 3-1 Islanders. Brock Nelson sealed the deal later with an empty netter, leading to a 4-1 Islanders win.

After a pretty brutal opening frame, the Islanders had a really strong back 40 minutes. They controlled a lot of the play and were able to sustain some pressure once they got into the zone. New York managed to hold Boston to only 14 shots through the second and third period combined and ended up being the much better team in the back half of the game.

It’s a promising win after a poor road trip. They’d need to string together a lot more games like this if they want any chance of climbing back up the standings but at the very least, it was a nice win.

New York’s next game comes on Sunday against the Montreal Canadiens.
