The New York Islanders held on for a win against the St. Louis Blues today, taking a 2-1 victory.

The Islanders opened the scoring in the first period, with Oliver Wahlstrom banking the puck in off Jordan Binnington – on a goal that Binnington looked pretty bad on. It looked like Kyle Palmieri had extended the lead later as well, but the goal was called off due to goalie interference, and it remained 1-0 for New York. Regardless, it was a strong opening frame for the Islanders.

New York extended their lead on a power play only about a minute into the second period, as Noah Dobson got a great pass to Brock Nelson, who put the puck into the open net. It was a pretty dull frame after that, as the Islanders limited the Blues to only five shots (and had just six of their own), but that benefitted New York, as they kept a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes.

In the third period, Kyle Palmieri tipped in Ryan Pulock’s point shot on a power play but for the second time in the game, his goal was called off, this time as the result of a high stick. The Blues finally got on the board later in the frame, as Robert Thomas managed to jam a puck past Sorokin with under three minutes to go. St. Louis really pressured in the last few minutes but Ilya Sorokin made some important saves and the Islanders held on for the 2-1 win.

It was a better game for the Islanders, with a really strong first two periods in particular, where the Islanders gave up only 13 shots, even if they only had 12 of their own. Most of the third period was spent in their end and they were outshot 15-8 in the final frame, but they still managed to hang on.

Two of Kyle Palmieri's goals were called back today, but he's been looking great. He’s skating with the puck more and generating chances on his own, after being invisible through much of the first half of the season.

It was a good game for Ilya Sorokin as well, who had to be sharp in the third period.

New York’s next game comes on Monday against the Colorado Avalanche, as their homestand continues.
