The New York Islanders dropped the first game of their six-game homestand tonight, losing 4-3 to the Vancouver Canucks.

The Islanders started slow, sustaining very little pressure against the Canucks in the first period. They gave up 13 shots in the frame but managed to escape with the game still scoreless.

New York struck early in the second period, as Noah Dobson put a shot from the point low-blocker, as usual, which got through traffic and in. Just a few minutes later though, Vancouver scored a point shot of their own, with Semyon Varlamov seemingly completely losing track of who had the puck and reacting late, as Brad Hunt’s shot snuck through him. Vancouver then took the lead off a tip from J.T. Miller, however, Adam Pelech set up Kyle Palmieri for a one-timer right after a faceoff and his shot beat Demko, tying the game again after 40 minutes.

New York took the lead early in the third period, as Anthony Beauvillier took the puck from Brock Boeser and made a move before putting the puck on net and when Boeser tried to clear the puck off the line, he was pushed to the ice and carried the puck past it. Vancouver responded though, first with Conor Garland finding Nils Hoglander for a tip-in to tie the game once more. Then just 45 seconds after that, Bo Horvat put a pass out to Vasily Podkolzin and he scored, putting the Canucks ahead. Despite the Islanders putting together quite a strong frame they couldn’t recover and fell 4-3.

The Islanders started slow and were outplayed through too much of the game, being outshot 38-27.

While goaltending is certainly not the team’s issue, I will say that despite having two very capable netminders, the Islanders continue to allow some terrible goals. It seems like in more games than not, Ilya Sorokin or Semyon Varlamov have allowed a brutal goal, with the first one given up today being an example.

On a better note, Noah Dobson continues his excellent year, scoring his 10th goal of the season. He’s tied for fourth on the team in goals and ranks third in points.

The Islanders have now lost four of their last five games. Their next game comes on Saturday against the St. Louis Blues.
