The Carolina Hurricanes picked up an overtime win in Minnesota yesterday afternoon. Here’s the game recap.

Minnesota got a great chance within the first 10 seconds of the game, when Brad Hunt got a partial breakaway but James Reimer made the save. It was Carolina who opened the scoring about four minutes in though, when Joel Edmundson’s point shot took a deflection and beat Devan Dubnyk over the shoulder.

Brock McGinn then added to the lead, getting the puck in front and while falling, was able to put the puck past an outstretched Dubnyk. It was a pretty great play from McGinn, considering how off balance he was when he released the puck. Minnesota was pressing near the end of the period, throwing some pucks on net and almost getting a couple bounces but they didn’t have any great chances.

The Wild got on the board early in the second, when Jonas Brodin found Luke Kunin, who beat Reimer on the glove side. Either Trevor van Riemsdyk or Sebastian Aho needed to pick up Kunin but he managed to find space and Reimer was just too deep. Only a minute later, Eric Staal had a great chance to tie from the slot it but Reimer made a massive glove save.

Warren Foegele then got a pass from Ryan Dzingel at the side of the net and beat Dubnyk, who seemed a bit off balance when the shot was taken. It was 3-1 Carolina despite the Wild leading 17-10 in shots.

Then while the Hurricanes had the man advantage, they had one of the laziest plays leading to a goal I’ve ever seen. They allowed Minnesota to keep the puck in their end while Dougie Hamilton headed for a change and pretty much everyone else was in the neutral zone, allowing Matt Dumba to get the puck to Zach Parise in front, who had not one but two chances all alone against Reimer. One-goal game on a play that was completely avoidable.

Then with three minutes to go in the second period, Brock McGinn couldn’t get the puck out and Victor Rask would eventually get the puck to Carson Soucy, who put his first NHL goal past Reimer.

In the third period, it looked like Minnesota had taken the lead on a brutal goal that squeaked through but Reimer managed to stick his glove behind him to drag the puck off the line. Then Jordan Greenway used his power to drive to get net and got a shot through Reimer that hit the post.

The game went to overtime, where Andrei Svechnikov gave the Hurricanes the win with a quick and deceptive shot that beat Dubnyk.

Despite the win, the Hurricanes didn’t look great. They got outshot and looked careless at times. Though Reimer stopped 32 of 35 shots and usually looks awkward in net as is, I don’t know that I’d say it was a good game for him. He was playing so deep in his net and nearly allowed a couple bad goals (he didn’t but it was more based on luck than just his awkward-looking style).

Carolina’s defense really need to stop just letting players drive to the net with the puck. It’s been happening pretty much every game now and has lead to great chances and several goals.

A win’s a win though!
