The Anaheim Ducks snapped their four-game losing streak yesterday, beating the Tampa Bay Lightning 5-1.

The Ducks were coming into the night on a four-game losing streak, with their most recent loss having come on Wednesday against the Colorado Avalanche. It was a game where the Ducks played quite well through several stretches, especially near the end of the first period and first half of the second period. However, Samuel Girard opened the scoring for Colorado late in the second frame and the Ducks weren’t able to recover, falling 2-0. Despite being shut out again though, it was a competitive game against a very good team while on the road.

Last night, the Ducks came out with a great first period, outshooting Tampa Bay 18-7. Derek Grant opened the scoring about midway through the frame, before Kevin Shattenkirk buried a rebound to increase Anaheim’s lead to 2-0 just before the end of the period.

Derek Grant made it a 3-0 game on a power play in the second period and while the Lightning did manage 16 shots in the period, the Ducks kept their lead heading into the final frame. Early in the third period, Vinni Lettieri put a great shot by Vasilevskiy to make it a 4-0 game and while Ross Colton did get the Lightning on the board, Nicolas Deslauriers secured the win with an empty net goal a little later.

While it wasn’t a perfect outing, the Ducks managed to find their offense and in doing so, took a big step towards breaking out of their slump. It marked the third game in a row where they had at least 34 shots. While they still took far too many penalties and had to rely on John Gibson for some excellent saves, overall, Anaheim looks a lot better than they did a few games ago.

Despite being shut out in back-to-back games coming into their game against the Lightning, the Ducks look to be turning things around. They’re generating chances and hopefully, the win was the spark the Ducks needed to get back into the playoff picture.

Anaheim’s next game comes on Monday against the Boston Bruins, as they begin a five-game road trip.
