The Anaheim Ducks dropped their third game since the holiday break and fourth game in a row, losing 4-2 to the Colorado Avalanche today.

Both Max Comtois and Cam Fowler returned to the lineup, while Ryan Getzlaf joined Trevor Zegras in COVID protocol.

Anaheim came out strong in the first period, as Sam Carrick went to the net to bury a loose puck under two minutes into the game. It was a relatively good period for the Ducks, getting some decent chances and heading into the intermission with a lead.

The Ducks extended the lead early in the second period, as Cam Fowler had a nice give-and-go with Max Comtois, carrying the puck through the neutral zone before entering and dishing it to Comtois, then getting it back for a tip in front to redirect it past Darcy Kuemper. However, after the Avalanche pressed for a lot of the period but were held off the board by John Gibson, Devon Toews managed to cut the lead to 2-1 on a power play, snapping in a shot from a good spot.

Gabriel Landeskog tied the game on another power play early in the third period, tapping a rebound into an open net. Despite the Ducks getting some quality chances through the period, Anaheim gave up a 3-on-1 late in the game and Logan O’Connor buried a pass from Nathan MacKinnon to give the Avalanche a lead with just over a minute to play. Then as the Ducks pressed to tie it up, Colorado sealed the deal with an empty net goal, taking a 4-2 win.

Overall this was a pretty good game for the Ducks, especially factoring in key absences. They generated a good amount of chances at even strength and may have deserved a better fate.

That said, the Ducks also took too many penalties once again and this time it mattered, with the team allowing two goals while shorthanded.

It hurts to give up these points, considering the Ducks had a lead going into the third period and then gave up multiple goals, with one coming late in the game on a defensive lapse. That said, it was still a more promising outing than their last two games since returning from the break.

Anaheim’s next game comes on Tuesday against the Philadelphia Flyers.
