A path to Michael Ferland

Even with the big trade the other day I get the feeling that Rutherford isn’t quite done yet tinkering with the roster. The name Michael Ferland hasn’t completely gone away. Is there a need for him? Should the Penguins still be looking in that direction? I say yes.

There is only one path forward I would be interested in with regards to Ferland. If the Hurricanes were interested in taking on Tanner Pearson’s contract I wouldn’t think twice about making the move. Ferland is a rental and that is fine. Pearson hasn’t demonstrated much of an improvement from his Los Angeles sample. He hasn’t been a great possession player and his 5v5 points per 60 of 1.33 isn’t moving the needle. Ferland is on an offensively inept team and rocking a 1.99. Here’s a snap shot of the two players

Pittsburgh needs tangible offense and the ability to diversify their forward lines. I think Ferland is a way better fit than Pearson. The Pearson trade was fine at the time. Although, there’s no reason for the Penguins to be married to it. If the Penguins can get Carolina to take on Pearson’s contract and throw in a first round pick I think the player is as good as theirs. Pearson is closer to a cap dump than a player with value right now. Perhaps the first round pick is too rich, but that first round pick is getting traded for something at some point. It might as well be for a legit offensive option on the wing. It would make the Penguins a lot more dangerous.

Who knows, maybe the Hurricanes would actually value Pearson given that he isn’t putting up offensive numbers. He would fit right in.
