Any update on Malkin’s status?

I think that's too much for Ferland. Also, I think Pearson is better than his numbers are showing right now but this isnt to say I'd prefer Pearson over Ferland, just think thats a bit of an over payment with the 1st.

you are kidding, right? a 1st round pick for Ferland? with no guarantee of re signing? you want them to give a 26 year old bottom 6 player who is under contract for 3 more years and a 1st round pick for a guy who has a contract expiring in April of this year? Geeze i hope GMJR doesnt read this and think its a good idea.

i have no issue if its player for player but in no way should the words "ferland" and "first round pick" ever be in the same sentence.

Wouldn't mind that move one bit. Still a short sample, but I haven't been all that impressed with Pearson. He is a bit too much of a passenger/vanilla for the contract, imo. I'm not looking to get rid of him by any means (he easily has the potential to be a 20 goal scorer next to Geno) but Ferland brings more of what the Pens need and with the cleared cap space, maybe we could re-sign him for a few more years.

BINGO will come on here any minute now and tell us why CAR doesn't want Pearson.

edit: I missed the part of the blog about including our first round pick. Im talking about a player for player type of swap (maybe small pieces thrown in)

I'd hate to give up on Pearson before we see him back with Malkin, but the cap savings of a move like that can't be ignored. The issue, though: what will Rutherford do with those cap savings? I don't trust his free agent valuations at all anymore, so it might be for the best if he doesn't have capspace to play around with.

Could trade Pearson to Canes for Ferland, snag Hags back from LA with 50% retained for picks. The cap hits of Hags (50% retained) + Ferland = Pearsons cap hit

If you think Pearson is a bottom six player, then a contract that has $3.5 mil AAV for three more years for a bottom six player is exactly the type of contract you want to shed.

Meh, I see him as a tweener...or a middle six guy. Similiar to Simon but costs a lot more.

The difficult part is that players with a good shot tend to score a lot playing with Malkin.

We don't want him for the same reasons you'd consider trading him.

He doesn't really move the needle much.

Also: Ferland's looking for $6 million + to avoid free agency. You probably don't want that.

Ferland is good.... but please don't throw a 1st rounder for him. I legit believe Pearson can perform is not saddled with JJ and Brassard

I agree 100% with this. Its tough to evaluate any winger this year who has spent the majority of their time away from Crosby or Malkin because Brassard was just that bad. I'm good with this trade if you think Pearson just flat out sucks and we need to dump his cap (we're not resigning Ferland and he needs to be treated as a rental), but if you think Pearson can be a contributor now that we have three competent centers I don't like this swap.

Neither Ferland nor Hags would be back next year of course, but there would be some cap room to play with and this years UFA list is currently kinda nice looking.

He was acceptable with Malkin.. then they both just died... then he was with Brass... and he found a way to die a 2nd time.

Its a shame that Schultz's return can't be right now or a week ago... give us time before the trade deadline to do a final evaluation with JJ as a 3rd pairing to see what we truly need.

Come on, you know you want Ferland. Give them a prospect if you want to keep your 1st so bad. It’s a low 1st in what’s shaping up to be a mediocre draft tho, so it’s not THAT bad..

If the Pens were to pick up Ferland or even Dzingel, I have to think Pearson is gone. That being said, I don’t envision JR doing anything else unless it’s a bigger deal that falls on his lap.

Agree with this. It's hard to judge a player when he played a good chunk of time next to Brass.

Who knows, maybe the Hurricanes would actually value Pearson given that he isn’t putting up offensive numbers. He would fit right in.

ALMOST went the entire blog without a douchy and/or condescending comment. Baby steps, I guess.
