The Penguins make changes to coaching staff... not that one

Coaching changes are coming to the Pittsburgh Penguins organization. They are happening with the baby Penguins and not the big club, yet.

This comes on the heels of WBS Penguins losing their first round playoff matchup to the Philadelphia Phantoms. One thing to remember about this situation is that the baby Penguins haven’t had a lot of talent for the past number of years and more importantly they were not hired by Kyle Dubas’ front office. The coaching may have been fine given the players available over the years, but they were from a different front office. It makes sense for Dubas to want to build WBS in the vision he has.

One of Toronto’s organizational strengths was the Toronto Marlies who had consistently good teams. They were a regular playoff team and usually had decent runs. With the Penguins heading into an era where they will be building their prospects and farm system rather than using it for immediate NHL roster help, this is the time to make the changes.

The new coaching hire for WBS will be quite notable in the sense that they very well could be the person who pushes Mike Sullivan out of his position with the team. The Penguins have a history of this with Michael Therrien, Dan Bylsma, and Mike Sullivan. In Toronto Sheldon Keefe was the Marlies coach before he eventually took over the Maple Leafs under Dubas. It will be very interesting to see the direction Dubas and Spezza go in for this upcoming hire.
