I wrote a couple of days ago about
Czech winger Jiri Sekac, who is apparently drawing a ton of interest from the National Hockey League after a strong season with Lev Prague in the KHL.
I kind of suspected that at the very least, the Ottawa Senators would throw their hat in the ring when it came to bidding on his services. After all, expectations are that Ottawa's entire second-line will be purged by the open of training camp. Even if the team thinks internal options are ready, it can't hurt to have
more talent.
Vishal Hussain, working for the Oshawa Generals, had an interesting tweet about potential front-runners for Sekac:
Now, I have no idea whether or not Hussain is a good source here, but I tend to give a bit more leeway to guys who are reporting about niche prospect stuff. And, he's not really saying anything wildly conclusive, which always helps the credibility cause.
I don't know what Sekac is interested by with respect to inking an NHL deal, but I can rationalize that one of the things he's probably looking for is opportunity. I'm guessing he also doesn't want to sign with a team that's just going to get absolutely destroyed for 82-games every season.
I think Ottawa provides both here. They're a decent team, and considering how many forwards are being shuffled out of the ranks, there is
plenty of opportunity. The jury seems to still be out on whether Sekac can translate as a top-six forward -- most earnest projections have him as a third-line guy, but it's going to pretty tough to tell until he gets a full season under his belt against tough competition.
Either way, it appears the Sekac thing is now worth monitoring.
