The Complexe Sportif Bell in Brossard was very busy yesterday, not only were the Canadiens’ prospects on the ice for the first time of this development camp, but plenty of fans had made their way to the south shore to get a look at the team’s latest draftees.
One such fan came with a special mission, she had gathered positive messages for the Canadiens’ 1st round pick and put them all in a book which she wanted to give David Reinbacher, a way to make up for the negative comments he received on social media on the night. Thanks to Habs VP of Communication Chantal Machabée, a meeting was arranged between the two and the young man got to see the Canadiens’ fandom is not completely crazy.
On the ice, the towering defense prospect was often paired up with last year’s 2nd round selection Lane Hutson for drills and they both looked very good out there. Perhaps that was a small glimpse of the future, who knows…
A number of prospects also spoke to the media including Filip Mesar who told the press that he wants to play in the American Hockey League this season. Last year’s 2nd 1st round pick spent the last season in the OHL with the Kitchener Rangers and he says he’s now ready for pro hockey.
Meanwhile, last year’s 3rd round pick Vinzenz Rohrer will leave the OHL after two seasons with the Ottawa 67’s to go play in Switzerland, since he was drafted from the CHL, he’s not eligible for the AHL just yet, but he wants to take the next step. Rohrer will therefore play with the Zurich Lions with whom he’s signed a two-year pact. The Canadiens have until June 2024 to sign him to an entry-level contract and retain his rights and an NHL deal would override the last year of the European contract. Just like Reinbacher, Rohrer is from Austria and the two had dinner together on Saturday night and caught up.
The development camp was also an opportunity to get updated information on various prospects. The aforementioned Rohrer put up 8 pounds since last camp, Luke Tuch has grown two inches and lost a bit of weight, he’s now 6’3” and 209 pounds, Lane Hutson has put on 7 pounds which takes him to 158 lbs and goaltender Jakub Dobes went from 199 lbs to 218 lbs.
Meanwhile, Kent Hughes made another signing yesterday inking Swede Lias Andersson to a one-year two-way contract. Andersson was picked 7th overall by the New York Rangers at the 2017 draft. Since then, he’s played 110 games in the NHL during which he has gathered 17 points and 57 penalty minutes. He was selected back when Gorton was the Rangers’ GM and Bobrov was their head European Scout. While he has failed to make an impact in the NHL so far, he did get 59 points in 67 games with the Ontario Reign of the AHL last season. If the name sounds familiar, it might be because Andersson was the captain of the Swedish team who threw their silver medals away after losing in the world junior championship in January 2018.
On the NHL front, Arpon Basu wrote in his latest article that center Christian Dvorak will not be ready to start the season following his knee operation, apparently, he may be out of action for a couple of weeks. That’s probably not going to be much help to Kent Hughes who might have been trying to move the center, especially since he now has a modified no trace clause according to which he can submit a list of 8 teams he doesn’t want to be traded to.
Development camp will continue today and there will be a scrimmage session at 11:00 AM tomorrow for the last day of camp. It remains to be seen if that will be streamed live online though.
