It’s fair to say that Cole Caufield has been the talk of the town since the season ended and today’s news is sure to put a smile on any Habs fan’s face today. After weeks of negotiating, Kent Hughes and the Cole Caufield camp have finally reached an agreement, the diminutive forward has signed an 8-year deal with an AVV of $7.85 million.

In other words, the Canadiens’ sniper is committed to Montreal until the end of the 2030-2031 season and he’ll be earning $25,000 less per season than team captain Nick Suzuki. This is no small feat on Hughes’ part, he’s just signed a potential 50-goal scorer a year to a very long-term deal, and he has managed to do it for a very reasonable amount. Inking Caufield to such a contract allows the team to stick to its salary structure which should allow the Habs to surround Suzuki and Caufield with all the necessary pieces to put a contender together with some leeway under the cap.

I’m rather impressed with the GM’s work here, signing Caufield to less than Suzuki is an impressive result, especially since the captain signed his deal two years ago and it would have been understandable if Pat Brisson did manage to get his client a bit more money. In 123 NHL games, Caufield has gathered 84 points including 53 goals.

More to come tomorrow once the full details of the contract are known and Caufield has had his media availability. In the meantime, have a good day Habs fans, I know I will!
