The Canadiens announced yesterday that Jordan Harris was the team’s nominee for the King Clancy trophy. The trophy is awarded yearly to a player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and who has made a significant humanitarian contribution to his community.

In his rookie season, Harris got involved with several important causes and was an engaged spokesperson in many of the organization’s community initiatives. He was involved in the Black History Month, and he also took a stand when players across the league refused to wear pride jerseys on their team’s LGBTQ+ night. A mixed-race athlete, Harris understands the reality of marginalized people and is an ally to multiple causes. The winner of the King Clancy trophy will be announced on June 26th during the NHL awards.

Meanwhile, while Kent Hughes said in his media availability post draft lottery that he had yet to contact players who’s contract wouldn’t be extended since he’s only been back a week from Europe, we’ve learned in the last two days that Otto Leskinen was heading back to Finland to play for Liiga club Tappara while waiver pick-up Frederic Allard’s stay in the organization is over as he’s signed a contract with Lulea in Sweden. Considering how many bodies the Canadiens have on the blue line in the system, this is hardly surprising.

Last season, injuries forced the Habs’ hand when it came to using rookies on the blue line, but their young players showed they were up to the task. With the way they’ve performed, they might just have made veteran defenseman Joel Edmundson expendable and there may be other rookies ready to burst into the league this coming season. Logan Mailloux is currently dominating the OLH playoffs and former pro-scout Grant McGagg reported something interesting yesterday:

It remains to be seen whether he’ll be ready for the big league straight out of junior, but the fact that he’s knocking on the door probably has an impact on veterans blueliners in Laval deciding to move on.
