The Habs won’t play until tomorrow night but still, the team practiced this morning and reporters were quick to notice that there were new players missing in action. 4 players were reported as having been given therapy days: Jake Allen, Jake Evans, Jordan Harris and Rafael Harvey-Pinard. As for Alex Belzile, it turns out that he broke his leg in Saturday’s game and he joins the already long list of Canadiens’ players who have seen their season end prematurely. Just another toothpick as Livia Soprano once said while updating her phone book with the obituaries.

In case anybody forgot, here are the 9 players who are now done for the year: Cole Caufield (shoulder injury and surgery), Arber Xhekaj (shoulder injury and surgery), Josh Anderson (ankle), David Savard (Knee), Kaiden Guhle (ankle), Christian Dvorak (knee injury and surgery), Juraj Slafkovsky (lower body), Alex Belzile (fractured leg) and Sean Monahan (groin injury and surgery).

Yes the Canadiens finally announced that Sean Monahan had groin surgery and that he’s done for the rest of the season. You’ve got to feel for the guy, prior to this season, he had had operations to both hips, now you can add a broken foot and a groin operation to his “pedigree”. Chances are, finding a new contract will probably be somewhat challenging to say the least, he’ll get signed yes, but teams will no doubt be weary of his health status and that might translate in shorter term and less money.

According to Man-Games Lost’s site, the Canadiens have now missed 670 games to injury this season while the Leafs, who are 2nd in that less than enviable stat have missed 532. Nick Suzuki is the only player to have featured in every single game (touch wood he manages to finish the season in one piece) and when the team plays its last game on April 13, it will hold its traditional “Jersey off our backs” promotional night, but fans may end up with some underwhelming jerseys. Every year for the last game, fans at the Bell Centre have the opportunity to win the jersey the players are wearing for that game, people would normally go crazy for Caufield, Slafkovsky and Guhle jerseys but instead they’ll have the opportunity to win Pezzetta, Wideman and Ylonen jerseys…not quite the same.
