Hossa Night has come and gone. Say what you will about the Chicago Blackhawks as a whole, but you can not deny that they know how to put together a ceremony. Bringing back Eddie Olczyk to host, having the other 6 members of the three cup club, and just an absolutely amazing video package. This team put out all the stops to honor the great 81 and his journey to the rafters.
Now that this night is over, the debate will begin again on who should and shouldn’t be joining him in legends row. 2, 19, and 88 seem to be locks and I think 7 should be going as well, however if you retire 7 is it just Seabrook who goes up or do you also include Chelios? I still believe Larmer’s 28 also should be retired, and I will even argue that Hjalmarsson deserves to be in the discussion as well. After that, however, I just don’t think you can make a strong case for anyone else. I think after a certain point having the number retired just loses that special meaning. What do you all think?
Back to actual hockey talk, the Hawks, after that great ceremony had to get back to business and try to make up for the brutal performance in Boston. Things didn’t start off great as the Penguins took the lead less than two minutes into the game. Luckily, the Hawks were able to stop the bleeding and keep it a one score game through one. The Penguins came out strong in the second putting up 2 goals in 5 minutes and unfortunately for me the massive lines at the UC washroom and concession stand prevented me from seeing these two goals and I had to come back to my seats with the Hawks trailing 3-0 and the life absolutely sucked out of the building.
The Hawks get on the board midway through the 2nd on an absolutely amazing show of patience from Dickenson as he gets the puck to Khaira for the easy tap in goal. With less than 5 minutes to go in the period we got a shot of vintage Toews and Kane as Tazer makes an excellent pass to Kaner and he just buries the piece top corner to get the hawks within 1.
The Hawks are able to tie the game with less than 5 minutes to go in the 3rd as Kurashev gets lucky as he just throws the puck on net from the corner and it some how sneaks on in. This good feeling was short-lived as 57 seconds later Crosby was able to pick up his own rebound and give the Penguins the lead once more. This was only the 4th goal he has scored against the Hawks and the first time he has scored in Chicago. Caleb Jones once again was a defensive liability as he just let Crosby skate right in uncontested, just not a good span of games for the younger Jones. One more goal on the empty net, and that’s all she wrote on this one.
This was more of the type of game you want to see from this team, even though they were down, they kept fighting to get back into it and they stayed competitive for the majority of the game and kept it entertaining. Ive said it once and I will continue to say it. I am ok with them losing a lot of games as long as they don’t get blown out every single one.
They now sit at 6-9-3 and get ready to face the Stars on Wednesday. More on that game on Wednesday.
