An undrafted free-agent, Leskinen first played in the Habs organization from 2019 to 2021 when he competed in 6 NHL games and 85 AHL ones amassing 3 goals and 36 assists with the farm team. Once his contract was up, he returned to Europe and all signs seemed to point to him staying there as he had signed a two-year deal with Jokerit back in 2021. Still, the Canadiens had retained his NHL rights, so his only way back in the big league was through the Habs.
The one-year deal he has signed with Montreal will see him earn $750,000 in the NHL and $300,000 in the AHL. Considering how crowded the Montreal blue line is on the left side, this is either a depth-move or the new regime feels Leskinen was not given a proper chance to shine under the old administration. Whatever it is, there’s no doubt that his offensive style would be much more suited to today’s Canadiens’ hockey then to the Bergevin era one.
Of course, it could also mean that more moves are to be expected, on the left side since the Habs and Rocket now have Edmundson, Romanov, Harris, Fairbrother, Norlinder, Leskinen, Guhle, Xhekaj on top of pending restricted free agents Clague and Schueneman and unrestricted free agents Lagesson, Ouellet and Niku.

Comme le CH avait conservé ses droits dans la LNH par contre, sa seule option pour revenir dans le circuit Bettman était de resigner avec les Habs.
Le pacte d’un an qu’il a signé avec Montréal le vera faire $750,000 dans la LNH et $300,000 dans la LAH. Considérant que la côté gauche de la ligne bleue commence à être un tantinet surpeuplé dans l’organisation, il s’agit soit d’une signature de profondeur ou encore le nouveau régime croit qu’il n’a pas eu droit à une vrai chance sous l’ancienne administration. Peu importe, mais il ne fait aucun doute que son style de jeu correspond beaucoup mieux au hockey du CH d’aujourd’hui qu’à celui de l’ère Bergevin.
Bien sûr, ça pourrait aussi vouloir dire qu’on peut s’attendre à voir du mouvement si on considère que l’organisation possède maintenant tout un assortiment de défenseurs à la gauche : Edmundson, Romanov, Harris, Fairbrother, Norlinder, Leskinen, Guhle, Xhekaj en plus des agents libres avec restrictions Clague et Schueneman et des agents libres Lagesson, Ouellet et Niku.
