The Los Angeles Kings picked up a win to start their six-game road trip, defeating the New Jersey Devils 3-2 tonight.

The Kings found themselves down after giving up an early goal, with Jesper Bratt taking a long stretch pass for a breakaway, and deking out Cal Petersen. However, Alex Iafallo tied the game quickly after that, coming down the wing and picking a corner with a perfect wrist shot. After a penalty-filled frame, the Devils took the lead once again on a power play, as Jack Hughes made a great pass to Bratt, who scored on the wide open net for his second of the game. It wasn’t a great opening period, as the Kings weren’t able to generate many opportunities and found themselves down 2-1.

In the second frame, however, Los Angeles turned things around, putting 14 shots on net while limiting New Jersey to just five shots. Then late in the period, Viktor Arvidsson took a pass from Trevor Moore and went in on a partial break, beating Jon Gillies with a great release to tie the game heading into the second intermission.

After the Kings controlled the first half of the third period, Dustin Brown got the puck out front to Carl Grundstrom and he blew a shot past Gillies to give the Kings a 3-2 lead. The Devils managed to press after that and did get some decent chances late in the game, but the Kings held on for the win.

This was a really strong back 40 minutes for the Kings, who outshot the Devils by a huge 31-14 margin after the first period. Even if they weren’t generating a ton of chances at all times, they carried the play a lot and didn’t give up much to New Jersey.

It was a nice bounce back following their three straight losses, especially defensively. They did allow another power play goal, as their penalty kill continues to struggle, but at least they limited the number of power plays they gave up. The Kings also continue to get scoring from different areas of their forward group, with Alex Iafallo, Viktor Arvidsson and Carl Grundstrom representing the three goals.

With the win, the Kings improved to 21-16-5, holding the third spot in the Pacific Division and seventh spot in the Western Conference in points percentage. Los Angeles is back in action tomorrow against the New York Rangers.
