The Los Angeles Kings picked up a 4-0 win over the Detroit Red Wings tonight, improving to 3-2-0 on their current homestand.

After a great start where the Kings registered the first 12 shots of the game in under seven minutes, Phillip Danaut buried a rebound in front off an initial shot from Arthur Kaliyev. Then just a few minutes later, on the Kings’ 14th straight shot to start the game, Drew Doughty blasted a one-timer past Alex Nedeljkovic. We got an unlikely fight right after, between Danault and Dylan Larkin, but no more goals, as the period ended 2-0 for the Kings.

It was an absolutely dominant period for the Kings, who outshot Detroit by a ridiculous 27-2 margin. The Red Wings were still lucky just to be in the game, as Los Angeles certainly could’ve buried a few more, had it not been for Nedeljkovic.

In the second period, the Kings took a couple penalties and Detroit started to generate opportunities. However, the lone goal of the period came when Adrian Kempe extended the Kings’ lead, coming down the wing and beating Nedeljkovic.

The third period was a relatively even frame as well, with some chances traded but none amounting to anything. The Red Wings pulled their goalie early though and with about 2:30 to go, Trevor Moore iced the game with an empty net goal.

Obviously, the story of this one was the Kings’ dominant first period. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen shots after the first period at a margin like 27-2 and Los Angeles looked great. The game did even out as it went along but the back two periods were also fine for the Kings overall.

The team has managed to get off to great starts quite often this year, especially at home. It’ll be a matter of managing to sustain that type of control throughout the game going forward.

Cal Petersen also picked up a shutout in his first start in over a month, which was great to see. He had to be sharp in the second half.

The Kings’ next game comes on Monday against the New York Rangers, before finishing their homestand on Thursday against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
