The Los Angeles Kings started 2022 with a win, beating the Philadelphia Flyers 6-3 tonight.

The Kings wasted absolutely no time getting on the board, as Viktor Arvidsson tucked a puck past Martin Jones just 12 seconds into the game. The Flyers did respond after Cam Atkinson missed a penalty shot though, as Joel Farabee buried a loose puck in front to tie the game with seven minutes to go in the frame. However, the Kings took the lead back only about 90 seconds later, as Trevior Moore poked in a pass from Phillip Danault.

Adrian Kempe extended the Kings’ lead under a minute into the second period, one-timing a shot past Jones on the power play. After the Flyers were the better team for a portion of the frame, Brendan Lemieux managed to extend the lead on a great effort, sliding a puck in as Jones was moving the other way.

The Flyers did get a goal back on a 5-on-3 early in the third period, as Kevin Hayes one-timed a shot off Jonathan Quick and in. However, the Kings extended the lead once again midway through the frame with Danault burying a great pass on a rush from Moore, as the second line continued to click.

Ivan Provorov brought it back to a two-goal game with roughly four minutes to go but Arvidsson would seal the deal with an empty net goal, securing a 6-3 win for the Kings.

While the Kings did allow a lot of shots and chances, it was a decent game overall and as has been the case all year, Jonathan Quick was solid as well. The victory also marked Todd McLellan's 500th win as an NHL coach.

The Moore-Danault-Arvidsson line was on fire tonight, scoring four of the Kings’ six goals. It was especially important seeing Arvidsson pick up four points, after going pointless in his previous five games.

Brendan Lemieux and the fourth line continued their great play as well, with Lemieux scoring his seventh goal of the year already.

The Kings have now gone 6-2-1 in their last nine games, dating back to their win over the Dallas Stars on December 9. With the win, they now sit ninth in the Western Conference in points percentage. The Kings also still have four games remaining on their homestand, with a chance to gain more ground in the Western Conference.

Los Angeles’ next game will come on Thursday against the Nashville Predators.
