Since Monday, speculation about who will be the next Montreal Canadiens general manager has run rampant. Plenty of names are flying around, we know they must speak French and be ready to work as a team with Jeff Gorton. To me, that second requirement sounded prohibitive for Patrick Roy, after all, the man walked away from Colorado because he didn’t have enough input in roster decision working under his former teammate Joe Sakic who was the Avs’ GM.

However, this morning, Roy wasted no time coming out in the press and saying that yes, he does want the job. Never one to mince his words, he even said “What have the Habs got to lose giving me a shot and seeing what I could do with this team? They’ve been going around in a circle since 1993.” There’s no doubt that Roy has listened to Molson’s press conference and he’s aware of the two-headed monster the owner wants to create. That was made abundantly clear when Roy said that he is a team player, ready to learn, to listen and grow in any team process, even adding that he’s worked with Remparts owner Jacques Tanguay for years without any issues.

Perhaps Roy has grown-up since his highly publicized door slamming in Denver and if the aim is to hire a winner who would be able to make hard decisions, his name should be given serious consideration. Even though his association with the team as a player ended in chaos, bridges have been mended since then and on November 22, 2008, when his number was retired, Montreal went absolutely crazy for St-Patrick when he said he was finally coming home.

Could he be too hot-headed to be the man in charge? Perhaps, but then with the experienced Gorton as a mentor and safety-net, maybe, just maybe this could work…Molson has been clear though, Gorton has got a long-term contract in his pocket and he’s there to stay, he cannot be seen as some training wheels that will come off in a season or two. Clearly, for now at least, Patrick Roy would be willing to make it work, but could he be the man for the job in Geoff Molson’s eyes? We’ll just have to wait and see…
