Yesterday as the Canadiens’ rookies were taking on the Senators’ rookies, many noticed that Jesse Ylonen wasn’t on the ice, today, Guillaume Lefrançois told us why in La Presse. It turns out that the young Finn has yet to be vaccinated and he refuses to do so. When he arrived from Finland, he had to go through a quarantine which he has now finished, but the team felt he hasn’t practiced enough to play in yesterday’s game.

Had he been vaccinated, Ylonen would have been a candidate for a recall by the big club should the injury ninja be cruel to the Habs this upcoming season, but now, that’s somewhat of an unlikely scenario. While the NHL allows unvaccinated players to play, if their vaccination status renders them unable to participate in team activities, they can be suspended without salary. That could happen if they weren’t able to cross the border to play in the USA or Canada or if they caught Covid-19 and it was showed that they did so because they didn’t comply with the protocols in place.

Montreal will play 40% of its games in the United States and understandably, they’ll want to recall players who will be able to take part in all games. The protocols have not been finalized in the AHL yet, but the Rocket will play 30% of its game south of the border, so even with the farm-team, Ylonen could be forced to miss significant time. Things would be a lot easier for both the team and the player if he decided to get shot.

Still in this morning’s edition of La Presse, reporter Katherine Harvey-Pinard pens an interesting article about Stéphane Richer and the mental health issues which can sometimes affect hockey players. It’s an interesting read, particularly considering that 30 odd years after Richer had mental health issues while he was wearing the Sainte-Flanelle, Jonathan Drouin appears to have gone through something fairly similar last season. Harvey-Pinard mentions the Kostitsyn brothers, Alex Galchenyuk and Max Pacioretty as players who were also affected.

RDS had announced a big interview by Chantal Machabée with Jonathan Drouin for Monday the 20th at 7:30 PM, since then, they’ve pulled the adverts about it, and it doesn’t appear in their schedule either, but Harvey-Pinard’s article seems to say that it’s still going ahead. I’ve yet to hear back from Machabée or RDS about whether it’s going ahead, but if I don’t, you can be sure I’ll be in front of my television to check if it will be aired. I’m quite curious to hear what Drouin has to say and it seems that Stéphane Richer is as well judging by this morning’s article.
