Not long after taking over as coach Dominique Ducharme said after a heartbreaking loss that sometimes you lose games that you deserve to win and that eventually, things even out. That sounds spot-on tonight as the Canadiens didn’t deserve the win, the Flames were the better team and dictated the rhythm but at the final buzzer, the score read 2-1 Montreal.

The Habs can thank their lucky star and Jake Allen for those 2 points, Allen was solid with 28 saves on 29 shots, but his posts rescued him 3 times. In the positive column, the Toffoli-Suzuki-Armia line seems to be finding its groove and produced both of the Canadiens’ goals. All through the game, Armia showed how good he was at protecting the puck and was a key piece of this win, as was Toffoli who scored his 20th and 21st goals of the season.

Now for the numerous issues, firstly the Canadiens are more generous than Santa Claus on Christmas morning giveaway wise. It’s been a trend for a while but tonight, they gave the puck away 30 times, 8 of which came from the Weber-Chiarot pairing 4 for both. Chiarot was the most used defenseman and Weber the 3rd, it’s high time that Ducharme manages his minutes. The captain is turning the puck over even when there’s no pressure on him whatsoever, his decision making is insanely flawed right now.

Secondly, the lack of speed on the 4th line is quite a concern. Both Staal and Perry are slow but the later finds a way to hang on to the puck when an opponent catches up to him, the former seems to lack drive, coordination and effort quite frankly. Once again, he turned the puck over twice tonight and since arriving from Buffalo, he’s got a -7 rating.

Thirdly, while Nick Suzuki finished the game with 2 assists, it wasn’t a perfect game for him. 2 turnovers and a very careless penalty. Skating to the bench to change, he didn’t control his stick properly and clipped a Calgary player in the face… No damage was done but this is just unacceptable in a tight game. I’m not going to say anything about Drouin, it’s not worth my time or yours.

Tomorrow, the Habs will take on a rested Senators team at 4:00 PM and there are a few things to watch until then, will Carey Price be back? It was mentioned as a possibility today. Line-up wise, if Price is back, Primeau could be sent back down to Laval, so could Ouellet really, and there would be room to bring someone from the taxi squad to the line-up. Could be Evans, could be Caufield if the Canadiens decide to give him a shot. The Sens have already announced that Shane Pinto will be playing his first NHL game.
