From Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe:

(The Blue Jackets are enjoying success) while carrying several bad contracts. They are paying Scott Hartnell $4.75 million annually to be their fourth-line left wing. Brandon Dubinsky is their No. 2 center, but the ex-Ranger, due $5.85 million per year through 2021, does not look like a good long-term bet.

David Clarkson is on long-term injured reserve because of a bad back, but his $5.25 million annual payday, good through 2020, is just about impossible to scrub from their books. GM Jarmo Kekalainen will likely have to move a player to give Alexander Wennberg the raise he requires when he reaches restricted status in July.

THE BUZZ : Hartnell’s name has been mentioned frequently in trade rumors since John Tortorella became head coach, but as a fourth liner Hartnell has 22 points in 38 games and Kekalainen is in no rush to mess with the team chemistry.

Dubinsky is not a big offensive producer, but is someone that Torts trusts. He would be nearly impossible to move with another four years left at $5.85 Million in the Blue Jackets have already weakened themselves up the middle by trading Ryan Johansen last January for defenseman Seth Jones.

Clarkson’s career may be over with after numerous injuries, but his contract is insured unlike the deal of Nathan Horton, who Columbus swapped to Toronto in March 2015. The Jackets are not a cap team, so the ex-Leaf’s cap hit is inconsequential and should not be a factor in re-signing youngsters like Wennberg and if they come close to the cap limit or traded to a large market team that can place him on LTIR.

Andrew Shaw and Teuvo Teravainen became the latest ex-Blackhawks, partly because Brent Seabrook’s average annual value climbed to $6.875 million from $5.8 million. During the next offseason, another big-name player — perhaps do-it-all center Marcus Kruger, due just over $3 million annually through 2019 — might have to leave Chicago.

THE BUZZ : Kruger potentially could be the next victim of Chicago’s cap crunch, but the savings would be limited as his contract is just over $3 Million per season. It is just as likely that goaltender Corey Crawford and his $6 million salary could be moved with an ample supply of goaltending on the market this summer.

From Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman regarding the rumors surrounding the Colorado Avalanche:

Colorado has told people is, ‘Don’t ask us about Nathan MacKinnon and don’t ask us about Mikko Rantanen,’ who was their [first round] pick last year…..”

"Now, if you're asking about Matt Duchene or Gabriel Landeskog, from what I understand, teams have been told they're not giving these guys (away) because they're panicking," said Friedman. "If you want to come at [the Avalanche] with good, young defensemen or prospects, [they] are prepared to listen. But the packages are going to have to be big because they look at both [players] and see good players signed to good contracts."

THE BUZZ : Top scoring forwards such as Duchene and Landeskog with term remaining are a rare and valuable commodity, but defensemen are even more tough to find. Colorado may fall victim to the same problem that Edmonton ran into when trying to deal for blueline help, giving up former top pick Taylor Hall for Adam Larsson.

The floating of the perimeters of an acceptable deal is a strong sign that there is validity to the rumors of Colorado looking to shake up their core group. A package of a defenseman and possibly a first round pick (with 2017 not expected to be a strong draft year) is within reason, but a top prospect as well may be too much to hope for.
