What to do with Dawes

In his "Rangers Report" blog, Sam Weinman bought up the interesting topic of what to do with forward Nigel Dawes.

After a weekend in which he had three assists on Friday night against the New York Islanders (5-2 victory) and a goal on Saturday night against the Philadelphia Flyers (3-2 victory), Dawes merits serious consideration for a roster spot. However, there simply may not be room for him.

Dawes succeeded on Friday night because he played with two proven scorers in Scott Gomez and Brendan Shanahan. Dawes is known for playing well with players of high-skill and really, who wouldn't play well with guys like Gomez, Shanahan or Jaromir Jagr.

However, he may not be given this opportunity because for the most spot, the roster appears to be set. He would never take the place of guys like Brendan Shanahan (no duh) Ryan Callahan, Petr Prucha and this would leave him with a chance to play on the fourth-line, a role that Dawes would likely not succeed in.

Dawes needs to play and if that means going back to Hartford and then getting called up at a moments notice, so be it. This guy can play and soon enough, he'll get a chance to show it on the big stage.
