Generally once the barrage of off-season player movement slows down, I like to delve into the data to look at certain things that can help predict future production or performances.
Obviously there are many aspects that go into any bit of data and injuries, coaching changes, etc. can alter the forecast. At times we're caught shooting at a moving target, but generally when data is used properly it can help make accurate assumptions about the future.
Goaltenders more so than any other players are pretty whacky and tough to predict, but over at HockeyGraphs.com - one of the better websites for advanced data - they
created a system to help forecast future goaltender performances
Long story short, they take into account data from the last few seasons, but put a higher value on recent numbers when predicting future data.
I've written about Bobrovsky,
who the Blue Jackets want to re-sign sooner than later, a couple times pointing out
his numbers over the last couple seasons rank him among the league's best.
According to HockeyGraphs, that's no fluke and he projects to be right near the top of the league in save percentage over the next three seasons.
That's some excellent company to be keeping, and at 25 years of age on a rising team, there's no reason to believe he'll slow down any time soon.
