In what amounted to little surprise this afternoon, former Detroit Red Wings Chris Chelios and Brendan Shanahan have been named to the 2013 Hockey Hall of Fame class.

Alongside both players, defenseman Scott Niedermayer, coach Fred Shero and female hockey player Geraldine Heaney round out the class to be inducted in ceremonies on November 11th, 2013 at the Hall of Fame in Toronto.

Chelios, 50, was the 40th pick overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft. He was acquired by the Red Wings at the age of 37 in March 1999. He won two Cups with the Red Wings in 2002 and 2008, to go alongside the Stanley Cup he won with Montreal in 1986. He won the Norris Trophy as best defenseman three times and also represented the United States numerous times on the international stage, including four trips to the Olympics. He recorded 948 points in 1651 career regular season games.

Shanahan, 44, was drafted 2nd overall in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft by the New Jersey Devils. Whereas Chelios was acquired in the latter portion of his career, the Red Wings acquired Shanahan in the midst of his prime in October 1996. Shanahan helped the Wings win back-to-back Stanley Cups in 1997 and 1998, in addition to a final cup with the legendary 2002 Red Wing squad. Shanahan retired having played 1,524 games, producing 656 goals and 698 assists for 1,354 points, along with 2,489 penalty minutes.

He remains the only player in NHL history who has topped 600 goals and 2,000 penalty minutes.

Congratulations to the entire 2013 Hall of Fame class....and in particular Chelios and Shanahan for their contributions to the game and the Detroit Red Wings.

Both players expand the list to 54 NHL players (along with 9 builders) inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame that wore the Winged Wheel at one time in their National Hockey League career:
