HOSSA TO MOTOWN: 1 year, $7.4 million

Another outstanding move by Ken Holland & Company. As great a move as it is, it took the co-operation of Marian Hossa to forego a huge sum of money from many teams offering multi-year contracts. Hossa gets to play for a Cup once again this season and then can hit the jackpot next July 1st for a long-term deal. For his sake, I hope he gets insured against injury this season.

Nevertheless, the

2008 NHL DRAFT: Red Wings looking to add their extensive prospects list

Tonight must be a great feeling for Ken Holland and his entire scouting/management staff. Stroll into the Scotiabank Place in Ottawa as Stanley Cup Champions.

Let's face it. This scouting staff and the entry draft have been instrumental in the roster that brought home Detroit's 11th Stanley Cup in franchise history. A look at the players drafted by the Red Wings who played during the regular

Babcock signs 3-yr. contract extension, Hasek replacement, Stuart offer

Mike Babcock and the Detroit Red Wings have agreed to a 3 year contract that is expected to pay him approximately $1.5 million per season.

Funny how the new Maple Leafs coach is going to average $1.7 million over the duration of his new contract. Nevertheless, this signing is not a surprise to anyone who follow the Red Wings. Babcock had made it abundantly clear he wanted to stay in Detroit,

DETROIT RED WINGS: 2008 STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONS **UPDATED**

Although many teams may have fallen apart at the seams following a demoralizing loss such as the one handed to the Detroit Red Wings in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals, it was no surprise to see the Wings respond as they did in Game 6 Wednesday night at the Igloo (it will never be Mellon Arena in my eyes) in Pittsburgh.

Most teams usually take on the persona of their leader. Following Game 5,

GAME 5: Heartbreak in Hockeytown

Where do I begin?

Every so often in the sporting world, we are treated to spectactular events which define why there are so many human beings who love sports. That spectacle is enhanced when you get an opportunity to witness it firsthand in person.

For instance, last year, I had the good fortune, despite being a Detroit Pistons fan, of watching Lebron James singlehandedly carry his Clevel

GAME 5 Pre-game: Stanley is in the building

As I will be in attendance tonight at the Joe Louis Arena, I wanted to post a Game 5 pre-game blog to allow Red Wing fans an opportunity to rejoice tonight and share their thoughts IF Detroit is able to win this evening's tilt versus the Pittsburgh Penguins.

I'll be looking for Eklund, win or lose, to see if he will allow me the opportunity to post my thoughts via his laptop, as quickly as po

GAME 4: Paying the price

15 down, 1 to go

A great road victory tonight in Game 4 by the Red Wings in Pittsburgh, once again shutting down the league's most feared offensive attack. There were several areas where the Wings were superior tonight. More than anything else, it appeared they had more guys willing to pay the price tonight to get the victory.

That's not to say certain Pittsburgh players don't want to

GAME 3: Can't win 'em all

Let's give credit where credit is due. The Pittsburgh Penguins gave a much better account of themselves tonight and were deserving of the victory.

I don't think the Wings were necessarily poor tonight. Three bad bounces led to all three Pens' goals. Brad Stuart's poor outlet pass deflects off of Zetterberg's skates leading to a defensive zone turnover which Crosby converted. On the second

GAME 2: Two easy!

If I recall correctly, I mentioned in my Stanley Cup preview, defense wins championships.

Consider Games 1 and 2 of the 2008 Stanley Cup Finals as prime illustrations supporting this statement.

Now don't go overboard and insinuate that I am insisting that the Red Wings have already won this series. In reality, all they have done is maintained their home-ice advantage. With an 8-0 playoff h

Preview of Game 2: How does Pittsburgh bounce back?

Obviously, if the Pittsburgh Penguins want to win the Stanley Cup in 2008, they will have to win a game in Detroit's barn. With only three possible chances remaining, how do they go about improving on their performance Saturday night?

Chip-in and chase:

This is something the Pens worked on considerably in practice Sunday. Something has to be done to disrupt the Wings defensemen when they
