#7. Not bad for a team that always picks so low in the draft

Shanahan before Pat Burns is a complete travesty and/or joke.

Fedorov has only been retired for one year so far. I would think eventually, yes.

Bure got in and he never had all the accomplishments that Sergei had (3 cups, 2 Selkes, and League MVP)

One has nothing to do with the other. Only one coach per year can be inducted. Shanahan is 25th all-time in points. He deserves to be there.

Exactly.
Also Shanahan the player and Shana-ban the executive are two different things. These HOF inductions are a great honor but quite silly at the same time, meaning politics always play too big a role in it. Obviously enough people hated him because he should have been voted in last year.

Yeah Shannahan is the only player in NHL history with 600 goals and 2,000 penalty minutes. On top of the Stanley Cups and all.

Also, odds that Illitch retires Shannys #? I know its Illitchs policy to only retire players #s who are in the hall of fame..?

Is that the policy? They're going to retire #5 next year before he gets in, but obviously it's inevitable.

I'm not sure they'll retire #14 for Shanahan. I doubt they would let Nyquist wear it if they were planning on doing it anytime soon at least.

No, if they were going to retire it they wouldn't let anyone else wear it-hence Brett Hull wore 17 when he played for Detroit because 16 was unofficially retired, Nyquist, and I think Meech have worn 14 since Shanahan left.

Yup, Meech and Nyquist

I would also highly doubt that the Red Wings retire 14. The reality is that it's actually a lot harder to get your sweater retired in Detroit than it is to make the HHoF.

Here's who the Red Wings have retired: Five titans of league history (Howe, Sawchuk, Lindsay, Yzerman, Lidstrom), the other member of the original Production Line and a Hart Trophy winner (Abel), and a guy who played in Detroit for 24 years and retired as the second leading scorer in league history (Delvecchio). That's it as far as officially (or in the case of Lidstrom officially-to-be) retired numbers go for Detroit, though 6 (Aurie) and 16 (Konstantinov) are unofficially out of circulation. Red Kelley doesn't even have his number retired in Detroit, and the Detroit portion of his career alone probably ranks him among the top 10 to 15 defensemen ever to play.

Still, I think it'd be nice for Detroit to have a separate "honored" number system (similar to what the Leafs, Blues, and Flames do) for players the team wanted to recognize without necessarily pulling the number from circulation. That's where you'd file your great-but-not transcendent stars (Shanahan) and your notable long-term fan favorites (say Draper or Holmstrom or Osgood).

Speaking of honored players, this is not my original idea but I support the notion that the Red Wings should hang a pair of hockey pants from the rafters above each crease in honor of Tomas Holmstrom.

I think they should paint a picture of Homer's butt under the ice right in front of both creases so visiting goalies have their usual view of things
