The Calgary Flames have been actively trying to add players to their team, but have yet to make retaining their own players a priority.

Jay Feaster and TJ Brodie's camp have not had any conversations regarding a contract extension for the young defenseman.

"(We) haven't yet begun negotiations," Jay Feaster told me via email on Wednesday afternoon.

Brodie, 23, played a large role on the Flames last year as he recorded 14 points in 47 games while averaging over 20 minutes a night.

Brodie was also one of two Flames players, Mikael Backlund the other, who was over a 50% possession player last season.

The Flames have qualified Brodie and do have plenty of cap space, so a potential offer sheet likely doesn't worry Feaster and company.

I'm sure an extension will get done in time, but it's a little surprising that the Flames haven't even begun talks with arguably the best defenseman on the team last season.

It's no secret the Flames are looking for a top-6 centerman, and according to multiple reports they have interest in Tyler Bozak.

Bozak, 27, has 53 goals and 134 points in 238 career NHL games.

It's believed Bozak is looking for a long-term contract worth in the neighborhood of $5 million per season.

When I asked Feaster if he was interested in Bozak, he wouldn't confirm nor deny it and noted that commenting publicly wouldn't help his poisition.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have placed Mikhail Grabovski on waivers with the intention of a buyout.

Grabovski, 29, is a capable two-way centerman who brings a nice mix of skill and grit. He competes very hard and can play in all situations.

While the 29-year-old had a bit of an off season offensively, he was rumored to be playing injured for a good portion of the season. The Leafs were also using him in a defensive/shutdown role where he was playing extremely tough competition.

Grabovski has 61 goals and 125 points in his last 203 games and given he's very good defensively and often goes against the toughest competition possible, a case can be made he's better than Bozak.

I imagine Grabovski could be had for less money and term than Bozak so if the Flames are going to sign a centerman, I think Grabovski would be the better fit for them.

My thoughts on the trade that brought TJ Galiardi to Calgary.

Why the Flames should target Jonathan Blum.

I examine how Jay Feaster and the Flames fared in this year's draft.
