Buffalo interested in Briere?

We've talked about, and I'm going to bring it up again because I think there's a lot of different opinions going on about it.

Darcy Regier stated today that he has contacted Daniel Briere's agent. Now, that may not mean much at all, but it shows that the Sabres do have some interest in the former captain. So, they will talk to him.

He's 35 years old and had a cap hit of $6.5M last season. I wouldn't be willing to sign him for even close to that amount, but a small deal could help Buffalo.

Briere is a veteran who could lead by example, despite his recent struggles in Philadelphia. Still, he's always a threat in the playoffs, and he could put up around 50 points in the regular season.

He isn't the same Briere as he was when Buffalo won the Presiden't trophy and he isn't going to magically fix the Sabres. However, I'd like to see him back here. Especially with Buffalo needing forwards, I'd sign him to a short two year deal.

Of course, Briere would have to want to play here. He may want to go to a Cup contending team, and the Sabres are a few years away from that. But, if he doesn't get the money he is looking for, Buffalo could put in an offer for him.

The Sabres are headed in a new direction, but I believe bringing back Briere could help lead the team in the proper direction. Plus, I'd love to see him on the same line as Vanek.

I know everyone isn't in favor of it happening, and it is likely a long shot, but I think he could help and would be worth signing.

Matt Ellis to remain captain in Rochester

This is some great news from the press conference today. Regier said that the team will re-sign him. If Ellis does not make the Sabres team this fall, he will be the captain in Rochester. Either way, that is a win for everyone.

I love the way Ellis plays and he puts in an honest effort every single game. He may go unnoticed in the box score, but his work ethic is there, and he is certainly capable of leading the team.
