While the rest of the prominent members of the NHL's free agent crop (minus Teemu Selanne) has already signed a new contract or has been considering offers, Phoenix Coyotes captain Shane Doan has been patiently waiting for something that is out of his hands.
He's been waiting on the status of a petition deadline in Glendale, Ariz. to force a November referendum tied to prospective Coyotes' buyer Greg Jamison's lease agreement on Jobing.com Arena. If there is a referendum in the November elections, the status of the potential sale of the team will not be any clearer for quite a while to come.
Today it looks like Doan will begin to at least consider offers from teams other than the Coyotes. Phoenix, of course, is his first choice. However, while many think he'll stay out West under any circumstances, I would not be surprised if he comes east, partially out of respect for the Coyotes and not having to directly compete against them in the standings.
The other part of it: He could virtually take his pick of destinations, whether it's east or west. Look for Atlantic Division archrivals Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and the New York Rangers to compete HEAVILY against each other with their offers.
There is hardly a team in the NHL that could not use what Doan brings to the table, even on an over-35. He's one of the best leaders in the game, offers a physical presence and can still put the puck in the net. Really, what's NOT to like?
More to come...
