Worst case scenario for the Pens is the Kracken take ZAR. Had they kept McCann, they could have been able to keep ZAR (With the Kracken selecting McCann)

Hextall is banking on losing either Zucker or Petts and opening up more capspace. That was the play by unloading McCann for peanuts

There's also the chance that ZAR would have been taken regardless and Hex just unloaded McCann to open up 3 million in Cap to help reshape the roster in other ways

Unless we can unload money, there isn't much roster "reshaping" we can do. I doubt Zucker or Petts have the kind of trade value where we don't take some kind of player back in return

Tanev is not a 4th line player. He is a 3rd line player (and a hell of a good one at that). He was playing 4th line minutes for the penguins because they were so deep at forward. The choice of protecting Blueger over tanev is idiotic. Tanev is the much better player and is worth the money right now

Even in his example, RW should have taken Price over Bishop and made up the difference in $$ by taking Dunn instead of Tarasenko

Even then, I can't figure out if they'd be any good. They'd lack what every mediocre team lacks, a true #1 center

I'd be shocked if they took ZAR. I actually think this one comes down to what they choose with STL and Carolina. Dunn/Tarasenko, Bean/Neiderreiter & Pettersson/Zucker.

I pulled this from Eks page from a poster. This is how the Free agency works for the Kracken.

"The Kraken have an exclusive window from July 18-21 to interview and potentially sign pending free agents who were left unprotected in the expansion draft. If they sign a player in that window it counts as their pick from that players' former team."

I'd take Bean and Dunn. Nino seems like the type of guy that would get 1st line minutes and PP time for his 1 year, put up decent stats and then demand 7+ million as a UFA, and he's just not that kind of player

Tarasenko might be cooked and you don't want to start your franchise with an albatross contract, even if it's just for 2 years. It would depend on what kind of deal Dunn is projected to get

I don't think stockpiling a bunch of good young defenseman is ever a bad thing

A lot of guys in their last year of their deal I'd probably look to take just to flip with retention at the deadline for some extra 1sts. So, maybe thats an argument for guys like Nino

Only problem with that is if the Kracken get caught in the trap of competing for a playoff spot in Year 1. There will be pressure to be buyers when being sellers would be the smart move

WRT to the McCann trade, the only trades that make sense to me are ones where both teams achieve fair value and both protect assets. Full value could be draft picks, a different position where protections slots are available, or a player who does not need to be protected.

The penguins, for example, might have swapped McCann for a Defenseman whom they could protect and flip. One wonders if Dallas might have been interested in a trade involving McCann for Bishop.

Surely GMRH is smart enough to understand 2 players rather than 1? He's either playing a different game, or I'm really worried.

BTW, Rossi was right, McCann was left off the protected list.

He wants to shed contracts and cap without taking anyone back

In his perfect world he just unloaded McCann and now he'll dump either Petts or Zucker and free up between 7 and 8.5 Million

Dallas just gave away D1ckenson because they didn't have enough forward slots to protect, You really want to risk being stuck with 5 million more and an oft injured goalie in Bishop? How does that help the Pens or the Stars?

Hex doesn't want more guys on the roster under contract, he wants less

He got fair market value for McCann. The market told him a bag of pucks is what McCann is worth

This team loses a major piece of its physical play if Tanev is taken. Just look at the stats, they don’t lie. The numbers on this team drop off after ZAR and Tanev. Yes, he’s overpaid a bit but that’s where his value is at this time. [/img]

I mean if zucker is taken, the only benefit I see is that the only prospects that even have a shot in the nhl are lw. Zohorna, O’Connor, Poulin.
- 10inchTerror

I'd expect a prospect to start at bottom 6 lw too. Particularly with Malkin out and opening a roster spot. Hopefully someone really takes the opportunity.

Pens trade McCann for a prospect and Toronto doesn't even protect him?
- burgh4life87

Was reading up yesterday. Theory is Toronto expects to lose Kerfoot so they picked up either his replacement or the guy to get drafted instead of him in McCann.

Yup. The list I posted is official.

I think Pettersson gets taken. Too many better forwards available than Zucker for the money.

- Rinosaur

Not a bad scenario if it happens. They sort of need to lose one. Trade possibilities I think will open up for both after expansion.

The Athletic beat guys had an article breaking down expansion. Here’s some interesting stuff:

Tristan Jarry: A goalie had to be protected. The Penguins are said to have given considerable thought to making Casey DeSmith that goalie. They opted to instead keep Jarry. This could mean Hextall has intel that a team is willing to trade for Jarry. This likely doesn’t mean that Hextall is content to go into next season with Jarry-DeSmith as the Penguins’ goalie tandem. Sources have said upgrading in goal is the Penguins’ top priority this offseason. That pursuit will be challenging, but it’s not one that has been abandoned by the decision to protect Jarry.

Teddy Blueger: As it turned out, Blueger’s new contract was a sign the Penguins intended to keep him. We’d heard Hextall and hockey ops president Brian Burke thought of Jarred McCann as a winger and not a center. Valuing Blueger over McCann, who was traded Saturday, seems to confirm the Penguins prioritized the center position as they determined which forwards to protect

You basically waste two spots choosing to protect carter and Malkin. Seattle won’t take either and both players have major leverage to make sure it doesn’t happen. I really can’t see them not taking Tanev. Let Carter and Malkin exposed and protect both Tanev and McCaan.

You can’t expose Malkin because of his NMC, and also you just don’t do that to a guy like Malkin.

I agree that I don’t think Carter needed to be protected, but on the off chance he is taken, that effectively ends our season before it even starts so I understand why that decision was made.

I'd take Malkin and LTIR him for the first half of the season and then flip him at the deadline when he's healthy for assets if I'm Seattle

worst case he sits out the whole season and becomes a UFA, I wouldn't pay him a dime but the upside of being able to trade him outweighs the benefits of either Tanev or Zucker

I wouldn't play any games with teams trying to skirt the protection list by exposing franchise type players that they are betting I wouldn't take

Stipulating that this is true, then why would you be at risk of losing him in the expansion draft?
A more plausible reason to jetison D1kenson is that he wasn't worth the expected cap hit if he goes to arbitration. A 3rd for him seems fair.

Pens must like Hallender.

Seriously have any of you people any idea how corporate America works? Malkin is akin to the office exec who gets offered a “promotion” when it’s time to retire, not the operations manager who gets the boot if he’s bad at dialing into webex.

Hell no, if I was Seattle I'd still take him even if it meant he wouldn't come here. I'd screw the Pens over. I'm doing the same with Price too.

They didn't want to lose just McCann

They wanted to lose McCann PLUS another guy (Zucker/Petts)

Hex wants capspace to he can reshape the roster
