Merrill gets overwhelmed when he's pressured and loses more one on one battles than I would've liked to see. Part of that might be because he played on such a bad Detroit team. Playing a bigger role and more minutes than he should've been playing. But he does move the puck well.

He'll be a depth guy for the Habs. As long as he's on your third D pairing he'll be fine.

First impression: that is one hell of a trade for Montreal. Merrill has been one of Detroit's best defensemen this season. He makes less than $1 million. He'll help the Canadiens in the playoffs. To get him for a fifth-rounder is a great bit of work by the Canadiens

Max has a much higher opinion of Merrill than I do. But this trade certainly doesn't hurt the Habs.
