Victor Mete might finally get his wish and get to play regularly, but it will be on another team and if one of them claims him on waivers were he landed at noon today. That was only the first move of the day for Marc Bergevin who then traded forward Hayden Verbeek and a 5th round pick in the upcoming draft to Detroit for d-man Jon Merril.
Merrill was a 2nd round pick of the Devils back in 2010 and went to the Golden Knight in the expansion draft before signing with the Wings as a free agent last off-season. The scouting report on him prior to his draft was that he was a good puck moving blue liner who could play on either side.
This year, Merril has played 36 of the Wings’ 43 games and has 5 assists to show for it.
With a cap hit of $925 000, Bergevin didn’t break the bank by acquiring him and it definitely does not use up the cap relief provided by Brendan Gallagher’s placement on long term injured reserve. Bergevin sure has the means to carry on shopping, but will he?
