It doesn’t really though. Why do I need to know anyone’s sexual orientation?

It’s not about what you need, it’s about what they need as human beings. They don’t need YOU to know, but they need to be able to be themselves around their teammates, simple as that.

i wish everybody could just be able to be themselves and be comfortable but i understand it can be complicated when it comes to sports or any kind of team effort where you have to rely on the others around you because now it factors in their feelings and possibly behavior. it's a complicated subject for sure.

i can tell you one thing though, i don't know any gay people who say "i wish i'd never told anybody, i was so much happier when i was keeping it a secret."

all of that said (written), it is up to each individual if/when they want to come out and i hope it gets easier for people going forward in society, although i feel like it never will.

Good point, but I think it’s easier to do if you are in en environment where you know it will be well received. As for if it will even happen in the NHL, who knows, definitely not soon it seems.

interesting read Karine. are there any non-active NHL players that did come out after retiring? I guess that could at least be a start...

I don't believe when all players say they would be fine with it because if it's true then a player would have come out already. With that, what does it matter if a teammate is fine with it or not? It's not their business who another person sleeps with as long as it is legal and has nothing involving a teammate's personal life.

As well, I think a lot of hockey culture teaches players to be humble and not the story. You just know what will happen when the first player comes out: swarming by the press, exposé pieces, teammates pestered if they support the player and having anything done against the player being done with a hint of homophobia.

I should say though, michael sam's short comings in football can't simply be directed at him being gay.

perhaps there should be multiple coming- outs at the same time then, to avoid that situation? but I guess that can't really be planned in advance either lol

straight guys talk about their wives and kids all the time. They will put pictures on Instagram, etc. They are not really hiding the fact that they are straight. Why should gay people stay quiet? Makes no sense to me.

Thanks there was one, Bob Girard he played a long time ago and came out once he retired. Some of his former teammates knew, he wasnt hidding it but he wasnt confirming it either. She interviews his brother in the episodes...

You’re right it would create a proper media storm for sure...

As for Michael Sam, i’m reporting what was said but I can’t say that I know much about him. I’ll watch football on Sundays but I’m not into it enough to know about the prospects and all that

It's not like hockey players are reserved about their sexual orientation and that it's not meant to be known by the fans. Broadcasts are filled with players wives all the time and they are almost treated as hunting trophies.

When heterosexuality is so obviously the only allowed and/or praised sexual orientation in a community, it's really short sighted to say it's only a personal problem. There is clearly a systematic problem in sports: homosexuals are going to be targeted by violence and will meet more challenges practicing their passion, just as are black people. Hockey culture has racism and homophobic problems that should be address and really this documentary was really soft.

which would mean a lot of guys are still not willing to talk about it, even after retiring...
