Price playing 55 or less games a year is a good thing.
Allan is the best back-up we have had since Halak, so that is a bonus.
Just wonder if the cap space could have been used better elsewhere, given the number of free agent goalies available, which could have been had for less cap hit.
Won't judge 'til we see what else was done, but from a pure player perspective (not counting cap), this is a really nice upgrade. |

Hains: Bergevin Makes a Move
Marc Bergevin wasted no time in addressing one of the Canadiens’ most pressing need: getting a quality back-up goaltender. - Karine Hains
Unless you plan on flipping him, this trade makes zero sense. 14.85M for a goaltending duo after the cap remains flat and every team is desperate to shed contracts. Griess/Khubodin/Markstrom/Lehner/Crawford/Howard are all UFA's who will potentially be searching for a new team, and at a discount. Stl is now a 3rd rd richer, and one move away from retaining their Captain. I don't like this trade, especially from a team that will be struggling to make the playoffs. |

Very happy with this move, Bergevin did say he was willing to pay for a quality back-up and he just put his money where his mouth is. I believe this still leaves them with around 15 M in cap space for the upcoming season. |

Confused how this is a good move.
Id expect the Habs fans to be semi-pissed about this. MB just helped the Blues dump cap, and he gave them a 3rd round pick to do it. If the Blues had give the Habs a 3rd or 2nd id like it more for them. |

The Habs are not desperate to shed contracts, they have space. See above comment. |

Habs still have 12 picks in the upcoming draft including their own 3rd round one, they sent Washington’s 3rd to St-Louis. Can’t be annoyed when it’s obvious that Price plays best when not overworked. |

Well, then go and sign players to help you score goals
Or trade for players who can score goals that other teams need to move for value
Point is, come playoff time, you're going to have 4.5 Million sitting on the bench who can neither score goals or stop pucks because Price will clearly be the one in net
And you are minus a 3rd round pick for the benefit of doing so

I get that, and for the most part the Habs are in great shape with the cap as well. But MB just helped another GM dump cap, and paid to do it. Its bad asset management IMO.

The only assets he sacrificed was 2 picks he didn’t really need. We the contract limit there’s a limit to how many prospects a team can have. |

They still have some players to sign but yup, they have that much space. They must keep in mind that they’ll have extensions to sign for the season after but this is a great move which only has an influence cap wise for the 20-21 season |

I probably hate MB more than most people on this board, and while I would have liked him to wait a little to see if he could use his cap space to a better advantage, the trade is a decent one overall.
It is clear the Habs want Price to play less in the regular season, while not always basically giving up 2 points because he is not in net.
If Allan had more term (2-3 years left), I would be concerned |

Got to make the playoffs first and a back-up that gives you a chance to win will go a long way towards that. This guy can handle 25 games and give Price a much needed breather. Besides, offseason just started, watch for MB to get help up front soon enough |

and then went and got jake allen. which doesn't solve their goaltender requirements for the expansion draft unless they extend him.
you do not want to extend jake allen. |

That still doesnt explain why he gave the Blues assets to allow them to dump cap. Usually teams have to give up assets to do that, not gain them.

This.
The league should be packed with teams willing to give up assets to open up cap space and he GIVES the Blues a 3rd for a backup on a 4.3mil cap hit? |
