Bergevin Makes a Move

Forget the free agency market, Marc Bergevin decided to strike while the iron is hot and use 2 of his 14 picks in the upcoming draft to pry Jake Allen from the St-Louis Blues. The full trade is Jake Allen and a 7th round pick in 2022 to Montreal while the Blues receive a 3rd and a 7th round pick in the upcoming draft.

Ousted as the Blues’ starter by Jordan Binnington’s rise, Allen has been a solid back-up for St-Louis last season. He played in 24 games registering 12 wins, 6 losses and 3 overtime losses. His numbers on the year are also pretty good with a 2.15 GAA and a .927 save percentage. The Blues turned to him 5 times in the qualifying round and he had a 1.89 GAA and a .935 save percentage.

This appears to be a great acquisition for the Canadiens. They got a dependable back-up who will allow them to lessen Carey Price’s workload and they didn’t have to give up any established players to get him. What’s more, they had a surplus of picks in the upcoming draft and Bergevin found a way to use them to fix a crying need. The Blues needed room on the cap to be able to sign Pietrangelo and Bergevin was all too happy to relieve them of the goaltender’s contract. Allen just finished the 3rd year of a 4 year contract and has a 4,350,000 cap hit per season. This means he won’t be the goaltender the Habs expose for the next expansion draft though as he won’t be under contract by then. In 7 NHL season, the 30 year-old goalie has registered 150 wins, 95 losses, 27 OTL with a 2.49 GAA and a .913 SP.

In short, this settles the debate about Carey Price’s back-up before it even started and allows prized prospect Cayden Primeau to spend another year in Laval developing his game. No doubt that the Habs will hold a press conference with him in the coming days, if not hours. When they do, I will update you.
