Guest Writer: Chris on Devils: With Cap Space Needed, Is Mercer On The Move?

I’m still not convinced a team built around 3 Hughes brothers can win the cup against other great teams in 4 best of 7 series. Someone’s gona get hurt, out-muscled, or lose confidence and pout out. Would you rather have 2 Tkachuk brothers or 3 Hughes? MacKinnon/Makar or 2 Hughes? The list goes on.
Point is, our plan is for these 3 guys to be our best players, get paid the most on the team at the expense of other options, and be the identity of the team. Is that the answer for the next decade? I know they’re all young, but I’m not yet convinced.
Is Mercer the answer? Probably not, but I do still like him. Dougie I still like, even at his price, but he’s obviously not a long-term answer.

Hey Chris, still a guest writer? Come on!!!!! Anyway, I don't like the idea of trading Mercer. UNLESS what comes back is fantastic. I just wish Devils fans would stop complaining about Fitz not doing anything. They seem to want him to 'just make a trade' and as you pointed out, cap space is an issue. I do not doubt that something will happen, but things take time. #faithinfitz

I’m not ready to give up on Mercer yet. Plus we need a 3C and he fits the bill. Sign Luke to a bridge deal to manage the cap more effectively. He’s really only had one good 1/2 season. Make him earn the big bucks and prove his shoulder is not a bigger problem (like it looks like for Jack at this point)

Trading Palat to a team trying to reach the floor is the answer

Package him with Hamilton for Jason Robertson.

The way this team is constructed now, they will be worse off than last year. This team is in no way built to compete with the likes of Florida and their physical play. It doesn’t seem that the Devs can do anything because of the “anchor contract”
