Chris on Devils: With Cap Space Needed, Is Mercer On The Move?

Whispers have begun circulating that multiple teams have inquired about the Devils Dawson Mercer. Mercer who showed great potential his first two seasons has regressed a bit offensively in the past few years.

The 23 year old has been an iron man for NJ, playing all 82 games in his first four seasons in the league. Although his physical attendance has been perfect, his game has been absent on too many occasions. Mercer, who had a breakout sophomore season with 27 goals and 56 points, followed that up with underwhelming seasons of just 13 goals and 33 points in 23’-24’ and 19 goals and 36 points in this past campaign. While there’s still space for Mercer to grow, his high ceiling of two years ago has seemed to come a bit down.

Packaging Mercer would greatly help GM Tom Fitzgerald in his attempt to move on from the contracts of Ondrej Palat and Dougie Hamilton.

Shedding one or both of the aforementioned would open up much needed cap space for the re-sign of Luke Hughes and the eventual and seemingly inevitable arrival of Quinn Hughes.
Would you trade Mercer? Where do you see his career trajectory? Let’s hear it in the comments. I personally think under 50 points and low 20’s in goals is about where he maxes out. Two years ago I would’ve said he could take the leap and be a 30 goal guy with a 70 point potential, but his lack of finish and extended scoring droughts now have me feeling otherwise. He’s still a good middle six option for NJ and can be a valuable piece if he remains in Jersey.
